The History Of Tie Dye

In the beginning there was tie dye... and everything was good...
Then the dark times came... and everyone wore drab dark clothing...
Then the light came and broke through the dark clouds and tie dye was showered down upon everyone... and everyone was happy in their happy tie dyes...

How To Tie Dye: Tie Dye Setup & Supplies

The basic things needed to tie dye are white cotton t-shirts, soda ash, rubber bands, procion dye, plastic gloves, a way to apply the dye (squirt bottles or eye dropper and small containers), a place to apply the dye (a plastic container or on top of a plastic bag), synthropol laundry soap (or similar) and a creative mind.

A more advance setup includes a plastic table for a workspace. A shelf to dry dipped t-shirts and to store dyed t-shirts. Multiple plastic containers with wire racks inside to rest t-shirts on while they are dyed. And of course a washer and dryer machine.

Tie Dye supplies can be purchased online at Dharma Trading Company in San Francisco, California.

How To Tie Dye: How To Dip Instructions

An essential part of the tie dye process is dipping the fabric into a bucket of water mixed with soda ash fixer. The soda ash raises the ph of the fabric so the dye can react better with the fabric. The end result is a bright color fast tie dye that will not fade away.

1) Put on plastic gloves!
2) To make the Soda Ash Fixer Water add a half a cup of soda ash fixer for every gallon of water. Stir until the water dissolves all of the soda ash. Warm water works well but any temperature will work, hot or cold.
3) Dip a 100% cotton t-shirt into the bucket of soda ash water
4) Let the fabric become saturated with the soda ash water, but also be careful not to alter the tie dye pattern.
5) Squeeze out the excess water and set the shirt on a shelf. At this point the shirt can be dyed right now or left to dry for a few days before it is dyed.

How To Tie Dye: How To Mix and Apply Dye Instructions

How To Mix Dye

1) Mix up some different colors of Procion Dye with water into squirt bottles.
2) Take cap off squirt bottle and insert funnel.
3) Add one tablespoon of dye for every 16 oz of water.
4) Fill bottle with water about half way.
5) Shake and swirl bottle to mix dye powder into the water.
6) Finish filling bottle and put cap on.
7) Shake vigorously to mix dye, when there are no dry dye particles floating dye is ready to be used.

How To Apply Dye

1) Set dry dipped tied t-shirt onto a rack inside a plastic container.
3) Hold t-shirt on it's side and apply Black to the entire bottom of the t-shirt.
4) Apply red to a pie shape wedge that covers one third of the t-shirt.
5) Apply yellow next in the same way.
6) Apply green to the remaining third of the t-shirt.
7) Leave t-shirt to sit for twelve to eighteen hours. The colder it is the longer the dye needs to react and bond to the cotton. So the hotter it is the quicker the dye reacts. Say at 70 degrees F 8 hours would be a good time to let the tie dyes sit for. Four hours is the shortest time needed and the tie dyes could be left for several days before they get washed out. But the goal is to give the tie dyes about 12 hours of rest and reaction time before being washed out.

How To Tie Dye: Washing Out Instructions

The first thing that happens to a white cotton t-shirt that is about to be tie dyed is it is washed in hot water with laundry soap and soda ash fixer. Next the wet t-shirt is tied into the appropriate pattern and then dipped into a water and soda ash solution and set out to dry. The soda ash acts as a bonding agent between the dye and the cotton fiber. Without soda ash the dye will not stick to the cotton leaving just a faint hint of tie dye colors. The t-shirt can be dyed wet or dry as long as it has been dipped in the soda ash solution first. Dye is then applied to the t-shirt according to the pattern. The t-shirt is left to rest for twelve or more hours to allow time for the dye to interact with the cotton fiber. The washing machine is filled up with the hottest water possible and a concentrated laundry soap formulated just for tie dyers is added to the water to wash the dye out of the cotton fibers of the t-shirt and to stop and dye that is washed off the t-shirts to penetrate and dye other t-shirts in the same washing load. During the rest period the dye bonds together into the fibers of the t-shirt to create the new tie dyed cotton fibers. The extra dye that did not bond to the t-shirt is what washes off. Hot water allows for more of dye to be washed out of the fabric. To make sure all the dye is out after the first wash the batch of t-shirts is washed out again using more hot water and special soap. Finally the t-shirts are dried in the dryer and ready to be worn and loved!

1) Fill washing machine with super hot water and add one half a cup of synthrapol or similar super strength laundry detergent. (Anywhere from one to about fifteen t-shirts can be washed in one load at a time.)
2) Cut the rubber bands off of the t-shirt.
3) Place t-shirt in the washing machine making sure to fully submerge the entire shirt under the water.
4) Once the washing machine has finished, add 1/4 cup of synthrapol and 1/4 cup of normal laundry soap and run the washing machine for a second time.
5) Place the tie dye t-shirt in the dryer and dry.
6) Take the tie dye t-shirt out of the dryer. The Tie Dye T-Shirt is born!
